Ekota is a residential neighbourhood in the Mill Woods Area of south Edmonton. It is in the Knottwood area of Mill Woods. The name comes from the Cree language and the word Ekota means ‘special place’. The community is represented by the Knottwood Community League. The league maintains a community hall and outdoor rink and is located at 445 Knottwood Road East.

The neighbourhood is bounded by 23 Avenue on the north, to the east by 66 Street, and both the south and west by Mill Woods Road South.

Ekota had a population of 2,560 living in 947 dwellings according to the City of Edmonton’s 2012 municipal census, this was 3.6% lower than its population of 2,655 in 2009. The population density was calculated at 3,122 people/km2 in 2012 as its land area measures 0.82 km2 (0.32 square miles).

Schooling

Ekota has two schools in its neighbourhood. The Ekota Elementary School is operated by the Edmonton Public School System, and the St. Clement Catholic School is operated by the Edmonton Catholic School System.

Shopping & Services

The Mill Woods Town Centre shopping centre is within close distance to the neighbourhood and is located to the north east of the community in the neighbourhood of Mill Woods Town Centre.

To the north of the Mill Woods Town Centre, in the neighbouring community of Tawa, the Grey Nuns Community Hospital and the Edmonton Police Service’s South Division Headquarters is located.

The Mill Woods Park is located directly north, and the Mill Woods Recreation Centre is contained within.
