Demographics
Meyokumin had a population of 2,898 living in 1,063 dwellings, according to the City of Edmonton’s 2012 municipal census, a 5.4% decrease from its 2009 population of 3,063. The land area measures 0.97 km2 (0.37 square miles), making its population density of 2,987.6 people in 2012.
Residential Development
Most of the residential construction occurred during the 1970s in the neighbourhood when over half (55.8%) of all residences were built. Most of the remaining residences (34%) were constructed in the following decade.
The neighbourhood had a 2005 municipal census where approximately three out of five (60%) of all residential homes were recorded to be single-family dwellings. Townhouses are the next most common style of housing, accounting for one in three (34%) of all the community’s homes. Duplex builds account for most of the remaining dwellings. Three out of four residences (75%) are occupied by their owners and the rest are rented.
Schooling
The two schools in the neighbourhood are Meyokumin School and is operated by the Edmonton Public School Board. The second school, St. Richard Elementary School, is operated by the Edmonton Catholic School District.
Shopping & Services
The neighbourhood benefits from being within easy reach of the Mill Woods Town Centre shopping centre being located just north of the neighbourhood of Mill Woods Town Centre. Further north of Meyokumin, is the community of Tawa, where the Grey Nuns Community Hospital is situated and the Edmonton Police Service’s South Division Headquarters.
Adjacent, in the northwest of the neighbourhood is Mill Woods Park. The park houses the Mill Woods Recreation Centre too.
