Michaels Park is a residential neighbourhood located in the Millbourne community of Mill Woods in south east Edmonton. The community gets its name from John “Mike” Michaels, who was known for being one of Edmonton’s preeminent news stand operators. He operated the “Mike’s News Stand” which he opened in 1912 after arriving in Edmonton from New York. His next endeavour was Newsboys’ Band, founded in 1913, and set up to keep newsboys out of trouble, and who were often school dropouts. The community is represented by the North Millbourne Community League. The league maintains a community hall and outdoor rink and is located at 980 Millbourne Road E NW.

Whitemud Drive bounds the neighbourhood on the north, the west boundary is by 76 Street, to the east by 66 Street, and to the south by 38 Avenue. The Millbourne Road East cuts straight through the community.

Residential Development

Most of the residential construction (81.8%) occurred in the 1970s, according to the 2001 federal census.

In the 2005 municipal census, single family dwellings were reported to be the most common (54%) residential style of home. According to the same census one in three (29%) residences are townhouses. There are a reported fifteen percent rental apartments and apartment condominiums. The least common (2%) home is duplex style buildings. Approximately four out of five (80.2%) of residential units are occupied by their owner and the remainder are rented out.

There are no schools in the neighbourhood, but there is a public park named Michaels Park, where the community league that serves the neighbourhood is located.


The population of Michaels Park recorded in the City of Edmonton’s 2012 municipal census was 2,201 living in 846 dwellings. This was 0.3% higher than its 2009 population of 2,195. The population density of 2,651.8 people/km2 in 2012 was calculated using its land measurement of 0.83 km2 (0.32 square miles).
