Tawa is a residential neighbourhood in the Mill Woods Town Centre area of south Edmonton. It is a comparatively newer neighbourhood, with most of the residential and commercial construction occurring in the 1990s. Both the Edmonton Police Service’s South East Division Station and the Grey Nuns Community Hospital are in Tawa. The neighbourhood is bounded on the north by 34 Avenue, to the south by 28 Avenue, to the west by 66 street, and to the east by 50 Street.

According to the City of Edmonton’s 2012 municipal census, Tawa’s population was 1,972 living in 995 dwellings. This was similar to its 2009 population of 1,961. The land are measures 0.66 km2 (0.25 square miles), making its population density of 2,987.9 people/km2 in 2012.

Residential Development

Approximately one out of three (34%) of all residences are apartments in Tawa with most resale units located in low-rise apartment buildings consisting of less than five storeys. A similar amount (34%) of all residential units in the area are duplexes. Just over one in five (22%) are townhouses. Many residences (12%) are part of collective residences. Less common are single-family dwellings. Around 75% are occupied by their owners, with the rest of the units being rentals.
