Tipaskan is a residential community in the Mill Woods area of Edmonton. Located in the southeast of the city. The name comes from a word in the Cree Language meaning “a reserve”, and respects that the Mill Woods area was a Cree Indian reserve between 1876 and 1891. The neighbourhood lies in the Lakewood area of Mill Woods. The community is represented by the Lakewood Community League located at 260 Lakewood Road East. The league maintains an outdoor rink and community hall. The hall can be rented and has a commercial kitchen inside. Mill Woods Road bounds the neighbourhood to the east, 34 Avenue to the north, 91 Street to the west, and 28 Avenue to the south.

According to the City of Edmonton’s 2012 municipal census, the population of Tipaskan was 2,902 living in 1,125 dwellings, a 1.4% decrease to its 2009 population of 2,944. The land area of Tipaskan is 0.8 km2 (0.31 square miles), making its population density in 2012 of 3,627.5 people/km2.

Residentil Development

The 1970s is when most of the residential construction started. It was measured that just under seven out of ten (69.2%) of all residences were built in this decade. Most of the residences (22.7%) after the 1970s, were built in the 1980s.

The neighbourhood has a mixture of different housing styles according to the 2005 municipal census. Single-family homes account for just over four out of ten (42%) of the residences, just under a quarter (24%) are townhouses, with similar numbers (23%) of all residential units contained in low-rise apartment buildings consisting of less than five storeys. There is a small percentage (3%) of duplex housing in the neighbourhood. Approximately half (54%) of all residences is owner-occupied and the remainder being made up of rental units.

Household Statisticcs

The neighborhood’s average household is made up of 2.9 persons, recorded in the 2001 federal census. Approximately one in two households (46.2%) contain one or two people. Three persons make up one in five households (20.8%), and one in three homes (33%) consist of four or more persons.

The neighbourhood has considered comparatively mobile with one in five (20.6%) residents moving to the community within the previous twelve months according to the 2005 municipal census. Just under one in four (23.1%) moved within the previous one to three years. A high proportion (42%) had lived in the same home for five years or longer.


The three schools in the area are Tipaskan School, operated by the Edmonton Public School Board. The Edmonton Catholic School System operates the Frère Antoine Catholic Elementary School, and the third school is the Fresh Start (Millwoods) School.
